About BRIA
The BRIA forum group made up of leading suppliers, manufacturers, and consultants was formed in 2007 as a workshop where members could exchange and combine their expertise to look at ways of building sustainable buildings without risking their intellectual property rights.
Our focus was, and remains the development of carbon neutral affordable passive houses and schools. Given the complexity associated with a ‘fabric first’ approach to Passive structures using traditional timber sections, it became clear that delivering affordable passive building would require a radical rethink.
The design and fabrication process is not complete until every detail has been scrutinised by our design team, working partners and sponsors.
Passive Pod House (PPH) Prototype
After extensive research, we identified seven primary components that could be manufactured from engineered timber from which buildings up to five stories could be assembled without modification. Having erected a small test building we are now planning to build a prototype house in London. We have opted to build in a flood risk area to demonstrate that we can erect our buildings on some of London’s most challenging sites.
The building will be supported on foundations formed of reclaimed concrete beam set on a recycled gravel bed. The gravel bed will be laid to provide a stable, draining sub base with the services housed in concrete interlocking ductwork. A ring beam will laid on the concrete beams upon which the house will be supported.
